
The hemp plant has the potential to play a greater role in achieving the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) than previously recognized. While its medicinal applications are the primary focus from a health perspective, hemp is also widely used in cosmetics and as a nutritional ingredient for both humans and animals.
Amid the growing climate crisis, hemp offers promising solutions to tackle CO2 emissions. In agriculture, it sequesters CO2 similarly to reforestation. In industry, hemp serves as a versatile, recyclable raw material, providing sustainable alternatives to plastics, textiles, construction materials, and even advanced technologies.
However, the current landscape is fraught with challenges. High prices and surging demand reflect a system where interested citizens face restrictions, farmers struggle with overwhelming bureaucratic barriers, and industries are discouraged by complex regulations and legal uncertainties. Unlocking hemp’s full potential—particularly in countries like Germany—requires addressing these obstacles and creating a more supportive framework for cultivation, production, and innovation.

Jonas M. Westphal has already given lectures on the sensibility of legalizing cannabis in Germany and Europe during his logistics studies. Through aroused curiosity about the plant Cannabis Sativa L., he networked with retired cannabis expert Prof. Stephan Quensel from the University of Bremen, author of “The misery of addiction prevention”, who also wrote the foreword.
