Public Workshop
The Truckee River Flood Project conducted a public workshop regarding development of flood storage mitigation strategies for Critical Flood Zone 1 on January 30th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Grand sierra Resort. The meeting was attended by more than 100 members of the community, including the State's Floodplain Manager, representatives from the cities of Reno and Sparks and Washoe County, local citizens' groups, environmental interest groups, representatives from the building community, home owners' associations, and members of the Flood Project Coordinating Committee (FPCC).
Naomi Duerr, P.G., Flood Project Director, opened the meeting with an overview of the FPCC's three main goals for the flood project; reducing flood damages and deaths from a 1997 type flood (117-year event), restore 50 miles of the Truckee River between Sparks and Pyramid Lake, and provide enhanced recreation and open space in the Truckee Meadows.
Paul Urban, P.E., Flood Project Manager, emphasized the uncertainty of flooding in the Truckee Meadows during his in-depth PowerPoint presentation illustrating the physics of various scenarios relative to flood mitigation ratios and their impact on new and existing developments in Critical Flood Zone 1.
Members of the audience were given ample opportunity to voice their comments, questions, and opinions on the impacts of flood mitigation ratios relative to existing homes and businesses in Critical Flood Zone 1, as well as proposed development in this area.
