Community Coalition Organization and History

Community-Based Planning Process
Local organizations and the public were encouraged to participate in developing the Truckee River Flood Management Plan. It was and is paramount that our community aim to reach consensus and create a plan that will reflect the diverse interests of the community, while also providing the best possible flood management. Your participation was greatly appreciated in order to make this possible! Click to view graphic representations of the planning process and outcome: Phases 1, 2 and 3 and The Living Truckee River.  The Living Truckee River Guide is a detailed guide to Community Coalitions flood management plan.  This plan represents the community and how they want the Truckee to look.  This plan has also been included as part of the U.S. Army Corps study and is the locally preferred alternative.

The opportunities to participate include(d):

Committee Meetings
Committee meetings allowed a detailed study of project issues and opportunities. In order to most effectively approach this complex planning task, committees were organized into three main groups, each focusing on a different, but equally important, component of a successful flood management plan:

  1. Design and Environment Committee
  2. Financial Feasibility Committee
  3. Public Information Committee

Each committee prepared findings during study/work sessions and report back to the entire Coalition with regard to progress, questions and recommendations.  (Description of Committee Responsibilities and Leadership-You must have Acrobat Reader(free) to view and print.)

Community Coalition Meetings
Community Coalition meetings provided a forum for exchange of information between local stakeholder organizations, resource and regulatory agencies, members of the public and Truckee River Flood Management committee groups. These meetings allowed committee groups and all others to share ideas and findings with the entire Coalition. The Coalition meetings cultivated a synthesis of creative ideas and professional expertise, both of which were critical to developing a unique and successful community-based Flood Management Plan.

Neighborhood Meetings
We encourage neighborhood groups to discuss Truckee River flood management topics at their regularly scheduled meetings, or to arrange special meetings specifically to collaborate on ideas that they can share at Coalition and Committee meetings.

We would like to thank everyone who entered into the Coalition with a positive spirit; it effectively and wholeheartedly developed and promoted a plan to support the health and well being of our community. It is not to late to participate.

The coalition process is winding down but continue to monitor meeting notices. As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers process continues to move forward the Coalition and/or Committees may be required to meet, from time to time, to review documentation.  Please stay tuned to the page of links for meetings, notices, and agendas.
